The US men’s coach and the American Football Association are thought to be very near to striking terms after a decent World Cup performance, though his team crashed out in the round of 16.
The former Spurs and PSG boss was under contract until 2026, when it seemed to have been decided that he would lead the country into the next World Cup on home soil. But it is now believed that Pochettino and the USSF are now close to agreeing a new four-year deal that will run until 2030.
Reports indicate that negotiations had paused when the Americans crashed out in the round of 16 following a crushing 4-1 defeat to Belgium, though they had actually run their toughest games in the Group stages with their first historic of being table toppers for USMNT History and their first knockout win for more than a decade since 2002.
After their exit, the Argentine claimed he was “not negotiating” and would wait to decide. US Soccer CEO JT Batson added this was “active” and talked with the FA after reaching out over Pochettino’s vision for ‘next generation of Americans on the world stage’.
Pochettino has, though, been at the centre of the rumours surrounding vacant Premier League jobs and those with Milan at previous times, indicating what sort of longer-term commitment he may be prepared to make, though the USSF is clearly intent on backing him after what was ultimately an impressive World Cup journey.
