Deciding to quit your job is a defining moment in a career. While it’s normal to encounter challenges at work, the feeling of long-lasting dissatisfaction with occurrences in your job is a sign to call to quit. We must know the difference between working through challenges and leaving that position when things are not going okay.

They are many justifiable personal and professional reasons to quit your job. In this article, we’ll identify the 5 signs to know it’s time to quit your job.

Table of Contents

  • 1. When your skills are not valued
  • 2. When you are not passionate.
  • 3. Working in an unhealthy environment
  • 4. When there are no opportunities for advancement.
  • 5. When the company’s future doesn’t look bright.

1. When your skills are not valued

Many may find it comfortable, but if your job does not challenge you or your skills are not put to use, then you should consider leaving. However, staying in this condition will only limit your growth, skill-wise. More so, if you’ve requested to use your skill but got turned down, then look for other jobs that permit you to use your skill for the benefit of the company and yourself as well.

2. When you are not passionate.

It is said that “passion is the driver of success”. When you are not passionate about your work, it makes you feel dissatisfied and unfulfilled. This often results in poor work output, and sometimes a feeling that you are not fit for the job, depression at worse.

You may also feel unhappy because, though you are skillful,  you are not passionate about the job. So if you don’t feel excited or passionate about your job, quit or look for a position that you are passionate about.

3. Working in an unhealthy environment

For productivity and activeness, it’s best to work in a healthy environment; a place where your work is appreciated, good working conditions, and trust from senior colleagues. However, working in an unhealthy environment will not only affect your psyche but also your productivity. To develop your career, have a sense of belonging, and fulfill your dream, look for a job with a healthy working environment.

4. When there are no opportunities for advancement.

Unless you are comfortable with the condition you are in, quit working in an organization with no opportunities for growth or advancement. Opportunities for advancement are not just limited to vertical advances or promotions in an organization. Opportunities can be in form of working on a new project, mentorship, or learning a new side of the business. However, before quitting make a formal request for these opportunities. If the organization is not open to embracing such ideas, then it’s a good sign to quit!

5. When the company’s future doesn’t look bright.

Although it’s common for companies to experience times of highs and lows, some signs spell eternal doom for some companies. If the future of your company doesn’t look like getting any better, then it’s a sign that you should quit. Reviewing your company’s annual report will give you a clue or insight to determine this, for which you can save your reputation by quitting.

Have you ever quit a job before? What made you quit?

Which of the above signs do you think should spur a person to quit his/her job?
