The league stage of the 2026-27 Champions League guarantees to bring about stark contrasts. In one corner: Stuttgart, set to encounter the least challenging set of opponents. In the other: Lens, who has drawn one of the most demanding fixture lists.
After the draw in Monaco on Thursday, all 36 clubs now have knowledge of the eight teams they are to face. Each club will meet two teams from each of the four pots in this new format of the Champions League. However,unlike previous systems, each team will have entirely unique sets of opponents, naturally resulting in varied difficulty.
Approximately 16,000 teams across the globe are measured on a scale of strength in the Opta system. An examination of each of the 36 clubs’ eight opponents’ rankings will reveal how challenging each journey is.
According to the average ranking of each opponent, Stuttgart have been handed the easiest list possible. Their 8 opponents have an average ranking score of 88.9, giving the Germans an opportunity to build early momentum for the league phase.
The Germans have two opponents per pot and their team will include no group of elite European teams compared to some other clubs that will have that difficulty. Eight teams get direct to R16 and so every dropped point might be precious for Stuttgart.
Italian giants Internazionale has been fortunate with an exceptionally lucky draw too with an opponent rating of 89.5 meaning they have just the second easiest draw at the beginning of their campaign. They will surely view this as an advantage given that despite reaching the final two seasons ago,they exited the Champions League in the play-off stage.
The ninth easiest draw overall falls to Liverpool and as such their opponents’ rating is 90.0. Even with that average rating, manager Enzo Maresca has narrowly avoided facing the biggest sides in Pot 1. It will not mean that the English side do not possess any challenges in Pot 2 as they come against the higher ranked side from that tier.
For Arsenal, the draw is somewhat of a curate’s egg as their opposition list will include both Bayern Munich away and Real Madrid at home. On top of that there is a visit from Germany of Borussia Dortmund for all games in their domestic league. The Spanish defender of the crown and 2021 winners have one of the harder groups, which means the second team in the group will almost definitely come through for R16.
From Pot 2 they have two relatively favourable fixtures.
Their draw includes Sabah and Slvan Bratislava from Pot 4, currently the worst ranked teams in the new format of the Champions League, to put with the above. From both sides the bottom tier will give them an advantage in comparison to other sides in Europe and so their challenge is only so because of their top tier selections.
On the flipside, France representativesLens have drawn probably the toughest list in the competition, as there average of opponents ranking stands at 92.1. With both Spanish giants Atltico Madrid (second hardest) and Barcelona appearing twice each; there will likely not be as easy a start in Europe as will be granted for the German. It will surely mean they will be aiming solely for a result at one of the biggest names as they begin the tournament to give them the edge in gaining enough points at one particular match.
A tougher list for their group but what do Atltico Madrid still bring as challengers….
Atltico Madrid face Manchester Utd and Liverpool so they possess the two hardest opponents available to them which will result in a harder route for themselves. However, they must do this while being visited by fellow Europeans to see who comes out on top, which means as long as they take three points from one of the home fixtures then they remain in a strong position with what will then be a good looking schedule in terms of winning points.
Man City have been assigned Europe’s toughest draw among the 5 Premier League teams, and their opponents will have an average score of 91.7. They will face PSG from Europe’s best eight and Barca. Porto make up Pot 3’s sides and there are two challenging ones that they will look upon.
Aston Villa have also been granted and difficult draw as with teams like PSG, Barcelona, Dortmund and Chelsea who are in the top tier. Their choice of either PSG or Dortmund means the opposition is guaranteed to be among the toughest.
Rival outfit Manchester Utd will be facing one of European footballs biggest teams in Germany’s champions Bayern Munich which will be a truly epic clash in Europe. They do not have any teams from the two biggest pots that would make them more challenging. What must mean there will be little space to mistake the other matches for anything less than certain three points.
The stakes are enormous for all clubs participating in this new competition and all 36 will want to secure top two spots in the league to go directly through to R16, otherwise face potentially testing two-legged ties to reach the latter stages of the tournament. Although some sides have obviously been fortunate, some have faced much harder schedules but it will make for an excellent spectacle to see if these predictions hold true.
