PepsiCo is set to cut 98 jobs at its facility in Cheverly, Maryland, representing nearly 70 per cent of the site’s current workforce, according to town officials.
The Cheverly authorities announced the development on Tuesday, saying the affected employees were among the 143 workers employed at the Pepsi Bottling Group facility located at 2611 Pepsi Place, near the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
The job cuts affect employees across several areas, including fleet, transportation, manufacturing, and warehouse operations.
Town officials said the layoffs were carried out on Monday, the same day they were informed about the workforce reduction.
Cheverly Town Administrator Dyland Galloway acknowledged the potential impact of the decision on affected employees and their families.
“These workers are part of our community, and we recognize the uncertainty and hardship that a workforce reduction can create,” Cheverly Town Administrator Dyland Galloway said in a statement. “We are committed to doing what we can to connect affected workers with available resources.”
Despite the reduction in staff, PepsiCo reportedly informed town officials that its sales and delivery operations at the facility would continue without disruption.
The local authorities said they had contacted PepsiCo to seek information about the future of the bottling and distribution facility.
The latest layoffs mean that 98 of the facility’s 143 employees will leave their positions, significantly reducing the workforce at the Maryland site.
Town officials said they would continue working to connect affected employees with available support and resources following the announcement.
