Sixty-two cases of monkeypox have been verified in Nigeria, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

This was stated by the NCDC in its most recent Monkeypox situation report, which was released on Tuesday.

The symptoms of monkeypox, a viral zoonosis (a virus transferred to people from animals), are extremely similar to those of smallpox, but they are clinically less severe, according to the World Health Organization.

According to the NCDC, the illness was diagnosed in 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory between January and June 26, 2022.

The survey also revealed that the illness is suspected in at least 204 people across the nation.

From June 20 to June 26, 2022, 42 new suspected cases were reported from 18 states,  out of 42 suspected cases, there were 21 new positive cases in Epi Week 25, 2022.

In total, there are two hundred and four suspected cases and sixty-two confirmed cases; forty-four males and eighteen females, have been reported from nineteen states between the 1st of January and the 26th of June. 2022: Lagos has ten cases, Adamawa has six,  Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers States have five cases each, Cross River, Edo, FCT and Plateau states have four, Nasarawa has three, Kano, Imo and Taraba states have two cases each, Abia, Katsina, Niger, and Oyo has one case each

According to the findings, one death occurred in a co-morbid 40-year-old male who was getting immunosuppressive therapy.

The NCDC stated that although African rodents are thought to be involved in the transmission, the precise reservoir of monkeypox is yet unknown.
