Manchester United fined Lisandro Martinez reportedly for his criticism on social media of the club’s management after Atleti’s 2-0 win over United in the Champions League game on Wednesday.
As per BBC Sport, the Argentine took responsibility for the incident after raising concerns about the club’s talent acquisition and saying that the team’s transfer decision-makers had played a role in the team losing form.
The central defender was not only unhappy at the loss the other night, but he also thought the players had not been given an extra boost after the 2025/26 season ended on an upbeat.
The 28-year-old explained afterwards that he was too emotional and that this affected the content of his statement. He, however, did not make a full apology until the following day when he indicated that “we are in the clear now”.

Martinez still in selection at Leeds game
Even with the alleged fine, Carrick has the option of playing Martinez at Sunday’s Premier League match where the Red Devils will be up against the Whites at Elland Road. However, whether or not the player’s performance at the game will be critical is not yet known.
Martinez’s actions in this case have opened another chapter about the future of the club’s recruitment policies, which is of great interest to the fans of the club. As Martinez’s contract stands, it will be terminated at the end of the season, and the club also reportedly has the option to extend their contract by another year.
As the media spotlight is more on the club’s recruitment strategy, Lisandro’s criticism is a great opportunity to get to know what the club’s management plans to do to improve the team.
The club hopes to leave the issue of the controversy behind and to be able to prepare for their match fixtures that are coming up, including the trip next Sunday to Elland Road to face a team of a former United player.
What the club actually does on the playing field may be really the key for them to keep a lid on the increasing pressure at Old Trafford.
