Lisandro Martinez has apologised to Manchester United’s hierarchy after criticising the club’s recruitment drive following their 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine defender met with United manager Michael Carrick and senior club officials following Thursday’s training session to address his comments questioning whether United would be able to compete at the highest level without reinforcements.

The musician wrote on Instagram that the meeting was “a good one” and that he was aware of the impact his anger had in deciding to go public.

“I met with the club’s leadership and the manager today,” he added.

It was a very good talk where we discussed, expressed our ideas, and we conversed about what occurred after Tuesday’s match.

Martinez draws line under controversy

The 28-year-old had named director of football Jason Wilcox among others when implying United required more signings to assemble a squad capable of competing in Europe.

But Martinez did say the timing and manner of his comments were poor.

“Bitter about the defeat, I vented my feelings at a time and in a way I should not have. I want to apologise for that,” he said.

He emphasised the need to stick together as a club and said all at Old Trafford were striving for the same aim.

It is understood by a club source that any internal disciplinary measures would be kept quiet, and that this was now all been put to bed by the club.

United will now shift their focus to their Premier League visit to Leeds United on Sunday, as they look to do better than they have so far after a poor start to the season. They are 13th after six matches, their worst opening in 40 years.
