Seven of its employees were detained, according to the Edo State Police Command, for extorting members of the public while on duty.

The state command’s deputy police public relations officer, Jennifer Iwegbu, said in a statement on Friday that the arrested policemen were disciplined for breaking the law while performing their jobs.

The cops were identified by her as Victor Osabuohign, Godspower Ijebu, Philip Ebatamole, Benjamin Ademola, Vincent Inaite, Robert Esikise, and Samuel Adefaye.

The Edo State Police Command issued the following statement in response to a video that was posted on Twitter showing a police officer named Victor Osabuohign conversing extortionately with a motorist named Arc Bolu.

Officer Osabuohign, who appears in the popular video, has been detained and is being investigated. While awaiting disciplinary action, the other officers who were previously detained on suspicion of official corruption are currently the subject of investigations.

The command also announced that the Assistant Commissioner of Police for Operations, James Chu, and the Command’s Provost Marshall, Avanrenren Godwin, have been appointed to an Ad Hoc Committee by the Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, to look into all cases of official corruption involving men of the command, conduct investigations, and impose appropriate disciplinary measures on such erring officers.

The CP requested that decent citizens of the state who have experienced corruption, extortion, phone tapping, or any other sort of grievances against corruption from officers and men in authority, get in touch with panel members.

He added advised the populace to conduct themselves as law-abiding citizens and to report any misconduct by any command staff, whether they were on duty or not.
