Residents in Edo State have been urged to receive hepatitis vaccinations.

This was stated by Dr. Gideon Iraoyah, director of disease control and immunization, at a celebration of World Hepatitis Day in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State in 2022.

According to Iraoyah, viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that can lead to serious liver disease and cancer, must be managed with awareness.

He claims that the state government would keep bringing together health industry players to increase awareness of the risks associated with hepatitis.

He continued by stating that hepatitis is a deadly liver infection and that screening is necessary to determine a person’s status and to provide treatment for those who test positive.

Dr. Eseigbe Freeborn, deputy director of disease control and immunization, emphasized the value of getting tested for hepatitis while urging patients to benefit from the free opportunity to become immunized against the lethal virus.

He pointed out that a three-dose vaccination schedule was in use, with the first dosage administered, the second dose administered a month later, and the third dose administered six months following the second dose.

Patients could be observed swarming into the UBTH Gastroenterology Unit to be screened, learn about their status, and receive vaccinations.
