Usman Alkali, the Inspector General of Police (I-G), has reaffirmed that the police will collaborate with sister security organizations to ensure the smooth conduct of the general election in 2023.

At a security policy dialogue themed “2022 General Election: Insecurity as a threat to constitutional succession,” hosted by Cleen Foundation in collaboration with Ford Foundation on Wednesday in Abuja, Alkali, represented by DCP Basil Idegwu, the Head of Police Federal Operation, said this.

Before the general election in 2023, he stated that the police were working to maintain the observable improvements in security personnel’s behavior noted at the off-cycle elections in Osun, Ekiti, and Anambra.

Alkali claimed that the police would guarantee the peaceful conduct of the 2023 election by drawing on the accomplishments seen in the elections for Edo, Ondo, and Anambra.

He said that the police had implemented some training programs for their officers and men across the nation to bolster the security response mechanism.

He claimed that the training covered topics including election security to ensure that voters may exercise their right to vote in 2023 without worrying about being harassed or intimidated by criminal elements.

The Cleen Foundation’s Executive Director, Mr. Gad Peter, asked the police and other security organizations to create a thorough roadmap on public safety and security in the lead-up to the general election.

Peter claimed that the expansion in scope, dispersion, and sophistication of violent threats in the nation made a debate necessary.

He praised President Muhammadu Buhari for enacting the 2022 Electoral Act, which was responsible for some of the victories in the off-cycle elections in Osun and Ekiti.
