The postal company in the Republic of Ireland, An Post, has introduced a new digital stamp.
Through the company’s app, customers will receive a 12-digit unique code that they may write on their envelope in place of the customary stamp.
When a letter is processed for delivery, An Post’s letter sorting system will recognize the code as a live stamp.
The price of the digital stamp is €2 (£1.76) as opposed to €1.25 (£1.10) for a regular one.
“Here we have a product that works for everyone,” said Garrett Bridgeman, managing director of An Post Commerce. “Last-minute senders, SMEs, and business owners who need to post at irregular hours and may not have stamps on hand, as well as busy individuals who are time-poor and want to purchase stamps at a time and place that works for them.”
He claimed that the “value added of getting a delivery notification” was the cause of the 75-cent (66p) pricing difference.
The state-owned business said that there had been a rise in client demand for a digitized service.
Currently, the technology can only be used to send and receive envelopes within the Republic of Ireland, but it is hoped that it will eventually be expanded to include packages and international mail.
