The Independent National Electoral Commission -INEC, has cautioned political parties to avoid violent campaigns in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who made the plea at the “Training of Master Trainers on Election Technology for the 2023 General Elections,” in Abuja on Tuesday, October 18, remarked that violent campaigns were at variance with the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act.
Yakubu’s warning is coming after reports of clashes among party supporters during campaigns in certain states across the country. There were also reports that some political parties were denied access to public facilities for their campaigns in certain states. The commission, meanwhile, warned politicians against complicating the prevailing security situation in the country and urged them to undertake issue-based campaigns.
