American multinational, billionaire technology company, Amazon, is planning to sack up to 10,000 people. This latest move will make the e-commerce titan the newest digital powerhouse to start a large-scale redundancy strategy.
The New York Times had said that this would be not more than 1% of the group’s entire payroll, which had 1.54 million employees worldwide at the end of September 2022; this is excluding the seasonal workers hired at peak seasons like during the Christmas holidays.
The affected positions were in Amazon’s devices department, the retail division, and human resources but distribution by country was not yet specified.
The layoffs are coming after a hiring frenzy occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic leading to a surge in online buying. Amazon had then over quadrupled its workforce from the first quarter of 2020 to 1.62 million employees 2 years later.
However, with the plummeting economy, Amazon imposed a hiring block two weeks ago, and its staff has already dropped since the beginning of 2022.
