Republicans said they would examine the president’s family as a “top priority” one day after regaining control of the US House of Representatives.
The congressmen said the investigation would focus on the president’s son, Hunter Bidenoffshore’s business dealings.
The 52-year-old is already the subject of a federal investigation but has yet to face any charges.
The younger Biden has no official role in the administration.
Top Republicans, though, vow that their investigation will discover the extent of Joe Biden’s alleged involvement in his son’s business transactions, including while the elder Biden was vice president.
They said that the president lied to the American people about his alleged role in his family’s business transactions in a preliminary report given at a news conference on Thursday.
They accused Hunter Biden of crimes such as tax evasion and wire fraud but had no immediate plans to call him to testify.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Christopher Clark, said his client had no reaction to the Republican declaration.
Congressman Jim Jordan, who is set to become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, accompanied Mr. Comer at the press conference.
“The Biden Family’s business deals are a national security threat,” the Ohio Republican subsequently tweeted.
The Democratic National Committee has retaliated by disseminating a letter in which Mr. Comer, a Kentucky congressman, is described as “a Trump supporter who has made apparent that his fake investigations are political exercises aimed to harm President Biden.”
According to the White House, the inquiries were politically motivated.
Hunter Biden “cashed in” on his father’s status, according to a Senate Republican study issued in September 2020, although the findings did not accuse his father of wrongdoing.
Republicans gain control of the House with a slim majority.
The newly announced inquiry is one of several that House Republicans may conduct. Other examples include the Biden administration’s troop departure from Afghanistan and response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The select committee investigating the violence on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, will be disbanded when the new Congress takes office.
Rank-and-file Republicans have selected Kevin McCarthy, the current minority leader, to be House Speaker when the next Congress convenes in January.
If elected, the California congressman will succeed long-time Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, who announced her resignation from the position on Thursday.
Mr. McCarthy has warned that a Republican majority would reduce financing for Ukraine, although he is up against a slim majority in the Senate.
Meanwhile, Democrats will retain control of the Senate, the higher chamber of Congress.
