Two firefighters were killed when a jet collided with a fire vehicle as it took off from Peru’s main airport.

The Latam Airlines plane crashed with the truck shortly before 15:30 (20:30 GMT) on Friday at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport.

Social media videos show the plane hurtling down the runway, catching fire, and smoking as it comes to a stop.

According to the airline’s Twitter account, no passengers or flying crew were killed.

It is unknown why the fire vehicle entered the runway as the plane was taking off for Juliaca, a city in southern Peru.

According to Reuters, the prosecutors’ office said it was looking at the incident as potential manslaughter.

Flights were suspended for several hours on Friday afternoon by Lima Airport Partners (LAP), which manages Jorge Chávez Airport.

“At the moment, we are identifying and examining all the required aspects that could explain the source of this,” it said in a statement.

On social media, President Pedro Castillo expressed respect for the firefighters.

“I express my heartfelt condolences to the relatives of Ángel Torres and Nicolás Santa Gadea, brave firefighters who died in the accident,” he wrote on Twitter. “My thoughts and my prayers are with them. I pray for the recovery of the wounded.”
