The M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have stated that the Friday evening ceasefire “does not impact” them.
They want direct contact with the administration of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
According to the rebels’ spokesman, Lawrence Kanyuka, they were not included in the agreement since they did not send officials to Wednesday’s mini-summit in Angola’s capital, Luanda.
The signatories, from Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Burundi, stated that if the rebels did not leave the area, an East African regional army would strike their positions.
Kinshasa has refused to negotiate with the M23, labeling them as terrorists.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo accuses Rwanda of supporting the insurgents who are moving on to the regional capital, Goma. Rwanda has denied any involvement.
