As the athletics competition for the ongoing 21st National Sports festival gets underway at the Stephen Keshi stadium tomorrow, Oregon 2022 World Athletics medalist Ese Brume will defend her long jump crown.

The sprint, where prominent athletes like Divine Oduduru and Enoch Adegoke are participating, is the most important competition to pay attention to. Adegoke, who hopes to become the first Nigerian athlete to defend the NSF 100m title in the past ten years, will present a tough battle for Oduduru, who is making a comeback to the sport after his last performance in August 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics.

Adegoke, who won a bronze medal at the 19th iteration of the competition in Abuja in 2018, was the top competitor at the 20th iteration in Benin City, Edo State, where he narrowly defeated his brother Alaba Akintola (10.28sec to 10.29sec).

Adegoke made history by becoming the first Nigerian to compete in the 100-meter final at the Olympics in 25 years when he arrived in Tokyo, Japan, as the current NSF fastest man, four months later. Adegoke will compete for the state of Edo, while Oduduru, with a Personal Best of 9.86 seconds, will compete for Team Delta.

Since being disqualified in one of the first-round heats at the Tokyo Olympics in July 2021, Oduduru hasn’t raced in the 100-meter event. Since running a 20.16 in the first semifinal of the 200-meter competition at the Tokyo Games in August 2021, he hasn’t competed in any event either.

A resolution to the conflict between the two will be offered by Delta 2022. Adegoke is going for his third medal in as many attempts, while Oduduru, who is competing in the 100m for the first time, is going for his first.

At the present sports competition, 15-year-old Victoria Enwemanya defeated her coach to earn gold in the 501 single darts category. For the youthful Enwemanya, participating in her first Olympics and helping Delta win the gold medal is the pinnacle of her sporting career.

In the darts competition, there are still 18 gold medals up for grabs in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.
