Numerous prisoners exchanged between Russia and Ukraine including a US citizen who has been detained since June.

In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country had received 64 soldiers, including four officers and 60 additional soldiers.

A prominent aide to Mr. Zelensky tweeted that an American named Suede Murekezi was also freed as part of the arrangement.

While declining to confirm the agreement, a White House official told reporters: “We welcome that news.”

The military men released, according to Ukrainian chief of staff Andriy Yermak, fought in Donetsk and Luhansk.

He said in a post on social media that Mr. Murekezi, a veteran of the US Air Force, had been aiding the Ukrainian people before he was taken into Russian captivity.

According to the Russian Tass news agency, Mr. Murekezi was detained in June in the eastern Donetsk region.

He was accused of participating in anti-Russian demonstrations and promoting racial animosity.

Mr. Suedi claimed to have spent weeks in a basement “torture room” where he had been beaten and tortured to electric shocks by his captors.

He said that the Russians had implicated him as a CIA agent.

The Washington Post claims that the cryptocurrency investor, who was born in Rwanda, moved to Ukraine in 2018.

He reportedly spent eight years in the US Air Force before leaving in 2017. He reportedly resided in the US state of Minnesota.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, stated that owing to privacy concerns, he was unable to confirm Mr. Murekezi’s release.

Along with two other Americans who had gone to Ukraine to fight, Mr. Murekezi was detained for a while.

In September, Russia released Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh and Alexander John-Robert Drueke as part of a prisoner exchange facilitated by Saudi Arabia between Russia and Ukraine.
