The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has allegedly reached
out to political parties perceived to be less known in the country and is considering an alliance with them in a bid to increase the chances of its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, ahead of the February 25 election.
The Presidential Campaign Council and its party leadership had long been making
overtures to the parties to adopt Tinubu as their standard and preferred bearer.
Reports indicate that the APC governors and Tinubu met on Monday, January 9
following fears expressed by some members of the political party on the need to
address inadequacies in the party’s presidential campaign.
It was learned that APC Presidential Campaign Council, including party governors and the candidate, were of the view that an alliance with other less-known parties would assist the party in getting the highest number of votes and the required national spread in the presidential poll.
An APC Presidential Campaign Council member, Senator Adesoji Akanbi confirmed to The PUNCH on Tuesday, January 10 that the APC was looking beyond the well-known Peoples Democratic Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, and the Labour Party, noting that deals could be reached with the smaller parties to adopt Tinubu.
Recall that Tinubu had been making overtures to the five, aggrieved PDP governors.
They were: Nyesom Wike of Rivers State with Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Samuel Ortom
(Benue); Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) as members.
But despite several meetings with the PDP governors, they have not openly endorsed the ex-Lagos State governor amid the threat of their party sanctioning them.
