South Africa Cuts Nigerian Consulate Electricity over Unpaid Bills

The Nigerian consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa is now experiencing a power outage due to the very large electricity bill owed by the diplomatic mission leading to the disconnection of electricity in the consulate.

A local online platform, IOL, on Wednesday, January 18 remarked that the City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, had said that his reasons for disconnecting the electricity had been because the Nigerian consulate-general had been defaulting since last year while making empty promises to pay up their owed bills by this month before he had taken matters into his hands to disconnect the light.

“The consul-general visited our Service Delivery Centre in Alexandra, and promised to pay the deposit, with the rest to be paid by the end of the month,” said Mangena.

“The same with The Catalyst Hotel, even though we realized that the hotel had lodged some queries on the debt, which we will be attending to. However, they paid R400, 000 and were reconnected and we will proceed to address their query.”

But Mangena had admitted that power had been restored late afternoon after the necessary payments and arrangement was made.

“The Nigerian consul owed over R400, 000, and they put up a R150,000 deposit,” he had admitted.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian consulate is yet to make comments on the incident at the time of filing this report.
