The former national chairman Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, has remarked that hacking into the database of the electoral commission is a feasible action.

Jega made this revelation while speaking to Trust TV on the issues surrounding the preparedness of the electoral commission ahead of the Saturday polls and issues regarding the 2023 elections in the country.

INEC introduced a novel tool, Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the 2023 elections.

BVAS is an electronic device designed to read Permanent Voter Cards -PVCs, and authenticate voters using their (voters’) fingerprints, to prove that they are eligible to vote at a particular polling unit.

The device will additionally be used to automatically send the number of verified voters for each polling unit, directly to the INEC database.

Meanwhile, while commenting on the effectiveness of BVAS, the former INEC chairman had praised the electoral body’s preparedness for the elections but had remarked that he could not guarantee that the commission’s database couldn’t and wouldn’t be hacked.
