In preparation for the Y2023/24 academic calendar, the Lagos State government has informed stakeholders that harmonized and standardized instructional days of learning for all schools will be prioritized to guarantee that children have a minimal level of learning days and hours.
Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), revealed this at a stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja.
Seriki-Ayeni emphasized the importance of stakeholders deliberating, harmonizing, and standardizing the school calendars of both public and private schools in the state.
She insisted that the engagement would ensure the development of a fit-for-purpose academic calendar in which students would spend productive instructional hours in classrooms, as well as function as a preventive tool in planning for unforeseen occurrences and circumstances.
Seriki-Ayeni went on to say that the OEQA’s mandate, through the harmonized academic calendar, is to ensure that the best interests of all children in the state are well protected and that the calendar will ensure that schools are held responsible to the same standards.
She added that it will also enshrine the flexibility that schools may require when faced with circumstances beyond their control to guarantee the safety of kids, staff, and schools while also providing the best learning results for students.
She complimented the stakeholders for their compliance with the Y2022/23 academic calendar, adding that it has been the most compliant year, even as she noted that there have been better contact between OEQA and the schools.
