Referee Will Pause Game During Ramadan to Allow Players Break their Fast

Ramadan season is upon us, and Ramadan fast starts on Wednesday. Following the precedent that was set in 2021 during Leicester City’s match against Crystal Palace, the game was paused to allow Muslim players in action, Wesley Fofana and Cheikhou Kouyate break their fast, an instruction has been passed by the premier league to match officials to ensure that games paused to give Muslim players in action, an opportunity to break their fast.

They noted that Muslim players and match officials will be in action during the iftar time before the game, and when the game is paused, all Muslim players and match officials are to the sidelines to take liquids or energy drinks before the match is continued.

This is beautiful innovation by the Premier League as it shows they are considerate of their players’ and officials’ affairs and consider their religious affiliation, knowing that they’ll be on fast and might probably get tired on the pitch for thirst.
