The Federal Government of Nigeria said on Wednesday in Abuja that the Senate’s protest cannot stop the continuing demolition of premises belonging to aviation authorities at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Hadi Sirika, the Minister of Aviation, stated the FG’s position following this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House in Abuja, presided over by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

His statements come less than 24 hours after the Senate Committee on Aviation, chaired by Senator Biodun Olujimi, instructed the FG to cease demolition efforts. The Senate asked the Minister of Aviation on Tuesday to halt the planned demolition of aviation agencies’ headquarters in Lagos awaiting the conclusion of its Committee on Aviation’s intervention.

The Senate resolution came in response to a proposal by the Chairman of the Aviation Committee, Senator Biodun Olujimi (PDP Ekiti South), urging the Senate to intervene in the upcoming warning strike by aviation unions.⁣ ⁣

In the motion, Olujimi reminded the Red Chamber of the looming warning strike by the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, and others.
