LASTMA Clears Air On False Reports in Circulation

He maintained that the officers and men of LASTMA would not hesitate to enforce those laws whenever violated to transform the state’s transportation system towards ensuring the free flow of traffic and reducing road accidents.

“The motoring public is advised to ignore and disregard all fake news circulated by faceless individuals and designed to lead them into breaking the traffic law of the State,” he added.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) issued a statement on Friday affirming its commitment to enforcing traffic laws and punishing those who violate them within the state. This statement comes in response to widespread publications suggesting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had prohibited LASTMA officials from apprehending errant motorists.

Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, the General Manager of LASTMA, clarified that these claims were unfounded and that the governor never issued any order preventing officers from arresting motorists who flout traffic regulations. This debunking was conveyed through a statement by Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Department of Public Affairs and Enlightenment.

Oreagba emphasized that the agency had previously addressed and refuted similar false reports, which had been circulating online since February 2020. He attributed these misleading claims to anonymous troublemakers and expressed bewilderment at their persistent efforts to deceive the public regarding the traffic laws enacted by the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2018.

“Their continuous attempt to mislead others and encourage the violation of our state’s traffic laws, as amended by the State House of Assembly in 2018, is quite perplexing,” Oreagba stated.

The LASTMA chief also underscored that it is the agency’s duty to uphold and enforce the traffic laws of the state. He emphasized that LASTMA officers and personnel are fully committed to enforcing these laws and will not hesitate to take appropriate action whenever violations occur. Their objective is to enhance the state’s transportation system by ensuring smooth traffic flow and reducing road accidents.

Oreagba urged the general public to disregard and dismiss any false information propagated by unknown individuals, as such misinformation is intended to entice them into breaking the traffic laws of the state
