June 12 is set aside yearly to celebrate Democracy Day, in honour of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other past heroes, who contributed immensely to the growth of democracy in the country.

Addressing Nigerians on Monday, President Bola Tinubu highlighted the vitality of democracy in Nigeria during the recent 2023 elections. He emphasized that the sacrifices made by past heroes paved the way for the democratic system that the nation enjoys today. Tinubu expressed the essence of democracy, wherein today’s winners can become tomorrow’s losers and vice versa.

“This year marked the seventh cycle of elections, which have become cherished rituals in our democratic practice since 1999,” stated the President.

Tinubu also subtly addressed his opponents, suggesting that those who cannot accept defeat in elections should not be entitled to the joy of victory when their time comes. He stressed the importance of endurance and accepting the outcomes of elections.

He further highlighted that those who dissent with the election results have the opportunity to seek legal recourse, utilizing the constitutional provisions. This accessibility to justice in the court system contributes to the enduring strength of democracy, which Tinubu hailed as the finest form of governance devised by mankind

“Those who cannot endure and accept the pain of defeat in elections do not deserve the joy of victory when it is their turn to triumph. Above all, those who disagree with the outcome of the elections are taking full advantage of the constitutional provisions to seek redress in court and that is one of the reasons why democracy is still the best form of government invented by man.
