In commemoration of Democracy Day, Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has decided to pardon 80 inmates who are currently held in different correctional facilities across the state.
Additionally, the governor has authorized the immediate settlement of their fines, facilitating the inmates’ reunion with their families.
A statement issued by Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, in Minna on Monday, unveiled this uplifting news in observance of the 2023 Democracy Day.
Usman clarified that the release of these prisoners aligns with the governor’s constitutional authority to exercise the Prerogative of Mercy.
The State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, recognizing factors such as old age, deteriorating health, and exemplary conduct, recommended the liberation of these 80 inmates.
Usman urged the released prisoners to seize this opportunity to engage in constructive endeavours and avoid any actions that may lead them back into confinement.
He also advised them to abide by the law and explore legitimate opportunities through various empowerment initiatives.
The Secretary to the State Government extended a call to the people of the state to utilize this period for introspection on their contributions to peacebuilding and their backing of good governance.
He further implored them to carry out good activities that will help in the state’s development.
