The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP has warned the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to instantly withdraw its Customer Regulations publications which mandated financial institutions to procure information on their customers’ social media handles for the purpose of identification.
Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP’s Deputy Director, issued the warning via a statement.
The Economic Rights group had urged the CBN to halt the regulations as it was illegal and did not conform with user’s data privacy.
SERAP has meanwhile given the CBN three days to withdraw the regulations risk facing legal action.
SERAP should be commended. For having the citizens rights in mind. They are one of the groups championing the rights of the citizens in the country.
It remains to be seen if the CBN will take SERAP’s threats seriously.
