Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has made a remarkable move to alleviate the burden on residents by introducing free education in all primary and secondary schools. This decision comes as a response to the recent removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (commonly known as petrol), which has had a significant impact on the cost of living. Governor Kefas previously announced a 50 percent reduction in university school fees to ease the prevailing hardships in the country.

During his assessment tour at Ebenezer Primary School in Wukari, Governor Kefas emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to bear the expenses of education, and students should not be burdened with fees. This initiative not only fulfils a campaign promise but also addresses the challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.

In addition to the university fee reduction, Governor Kefas had previously declared a state of emergency in the education sector, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to quality education. The announcement of free primary and secondary education further reinforces this commitment.

The response to these measures has been overwhelmingly positive, with many university students expressing joy and gratitude for the fee reduction. Parents also welcomed the decision, as the removal of fuel subsidy had made it difficult for them to afford school fees.

Governor Kefas has demonstrated a deep compassion for the people of Taraba State, as evidenced by his recent actions. His focus on addressing socioeconomic and infrastructural priorities, streamlining processes, and optimizing resource utilization has garnered praise. The governor’s proactive approach to cushioning the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on residents sets an example for the federal government to follow.

Some Nigerians argue that Governor Kefas’s actions only highlight the inadequacies of the federal government. They believe that if the federal government had taken similar measures to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal nationwide, Nigerians would not be facing the current difficulties. They also point out that the government-appointed body responsible for addressing the impact on citizens has not taken notable actions, further underscoring the commendable nature of Governor Kefas’s initiatives.

Overall, Governor Kefas’s actions in providing free education and reducing fees in Taraba State, as well as his broader efforts to streamline government operations, showcase his compassion for the people and his proactive approach to governance. It is evident that he is taking tangible steps to alleviate the challenges faced by his constituents, and some believe that the federal government should learn from his example.

Amidst the unveiling of Agbu Kefas’s plan to implement free education in Taraba State, doubts and skepticism still linger in the minds of some individuals. Questions arise regarding the governor’s true intentions and his ability to restructure the state’s struggling education system. While the concept of free education holds the potential to uplift the educational landscape, skeptics argue that Kefas’s motives may be rooted in a calculated strategy to garner trust, only to reveal his true colors in due course.

Critics emphasize the pressing need for a comprehensive plan to address the underlying issues plaguing Taraba’s education system. Merely introducing free education, they argue, may provide a temporary respite, but without substantial reforms, the condition of education in the state is unlikely to witness a substantial improvement. These individuals contend that Kefas’s actions may be a mere facade, designed to win over the hearts of the populace, with the fear that his commitment to education may wane over time.
