A devastating arson attack in Naples has resulted in the destruction of the renowned artwork, “Venus of the Rags,” created by esteemed Italian contemporary artist Michelangelo Pistoletto. Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi confirmed the tragic incident on Wednesday, revealing that the open-air installation, which had recently been unveiled in Piazza del Municipio, fell victim to this act of vandalism.

The sculpture, a prominent representation of the Arte Povera movement, depicts the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, Venus, standing beside a mound of rags. This thought-provoking piece, first crafted in 1967, symbolizes the stark contrast between timeless beauty embodied by Venus and the social decay and consumerism prevalent in modern society.

Mayor Manfredi, addressing the media amidst the charred remnants of the artwork, condemned the incident as an act of vandalism that is currently under investigation by the police. He also mentioned plans to rebuild the installation through a crowdfunding initiative, emphasizing the importance of preserving artistic expression.

Reacting to the destruction, Pistoletto shared his thoughts with the Italian news agency Adnkronos, lamenting how this incident reflects society’s inclination to respond to beauty, peace, and harmony with destructive acts of fire and war.
