Benue State is experiencing a significant shift towards wisdom and transparency as Governor Hyacinth Alia makes remarkable strides in tackling corruption within the civil service. In a recent revelation, a staggering number of 2,500 ghost workers were unearthed from the payroll of local government areas in Benue State, shedding light on the deeply rooted challenges faced during the previous administration.

In a press statement released by Governor Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, the governor explained the reasons behind the delay in payment of salaries for teachers in primary and post-primary schools, along with local government staff. According to Governor Alia, the past administration had manipulated and padded wage bills, leading to financial irregularities and fraudulent activities.

Governor Alia’s administration took decisive action by conducting an extensive staff verification and payroll audit, which led to the removal of the identified ghost workers. The audit also revealed various payroll infractions, including ghost schools, double dipping, unlawful employment, salary padding, and payments to deceased or retired individuals. The governor reassured that the genuine workers would receive their salaries promptly.

The statement read in parts, “The governor says the decision for the delay in the payment of salaries of the above-mentioned workers was taken after the government discovered mindless padding of the wage bill and other fraudulent manipulations on their payroll.

“He says the decision became necessary after the discovery, to enable the government sanitize and cleanse the payroll; to ascertain the actual wage bill of the state, and to know the genuine workers that are worth their wages.

“He reveals that the first phase of an extensive staff verification and payroll audit for all teachers and local government staff has just been concluded, and it has already uncovered over 2500 ghost workers that have already been removed from the payroll.

The commitment to unearthing corruption and streamlining the payroll system has been a top priority for Governor Alia. Since taking office, he has not shied away from confronting corruption head-on. For instance, he suspended all 23 local government chairmen and their councillors to facilitate an in-depth investigation into alleged maladministration within the council areas.

Governor Alia’s bold actions have received both commendations and criticisms. Some praise his efforts to clean up the system and restore integrity to governance in Benue State. However, there might be subtle controversies surrounding the scale and extent of corruption exposed during his administration, as it raises questions about the past leadership’s accountability, as the amount of dirt uncovered by Governor Alia shows how corruption ate deep into the fabrics of Benue state, under the previous administration.

Nonetheless, Governor Alia’s dedication to ridding the state of corruption and protecting the system from further abuse has been noteworthy. The ongoing measures to safeguard against payroll fraud demonstrate his commitment to ensuring a transparent and efficient government going forward. His resolve to confront corruption has led to the discovery and removal of ghost workers, exposing payroll irregularities, and implementing reforms to prevent future abuses. While opinions about his governance may vary, there is no denying the impact he has made in the pursuit of a corruption-free Benue State.

What are your impressions of this Governor? Do you consider him exceptional, or do you believe he shares similarities with past administrations that have governed the state?
