Governor Adeleke Pleads for Peace as ASUP Protests Suspension of Polytechnic Rector Amid Controversial Allegations

In a recent turn of events, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has found himself embroiled in a contentious situation with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in the state. The ASUP members took to the streets in protest against the suspension of the institution’s Rector, Dr Tajudeen Adewale Adetayo, leading to disruptions in the campus activities, including ongoing examinations.

Governor Adeleke, in a press statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, called for calm among the protesting ASUP members. He urged them not to be swayed by opposition parties, insinuating that the protest might be politically motivated. The Governor justified the suspension of Dr Tajudeen Adetayo, citing corruption allegations against him. The Governor appointed Alabi Adeyemi as the acting rector to take over the institution temporarily.

On the other hand, ASUP representatives, led by Chairman Dr Fatai Afolabi, have deemed the suspension to be unconstitutional and labeled it an aberration. They also declared an indefinite suspension of academic activities in the institution until the matter is resolved to their satisfaction.

Governor Adeleke assured both the ASUP members and the students that the allegations leading to the suspension would be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate actions taken accordingly. He pleaded with the protesters to end their demonstration and allow peace to return to the school community, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the educational environment.

The controversy surrounding the suspension is further complicated by the existing political rivalry between Governor Adeleke, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC), the opposition party in the state. This animosity between the parties has often led to heated disputes and contrasting views on the performance of the state government.

Earlier this year, Governor Ademola Adeleke proudly highlighted his achievements during the first 100 days of his term as Osun State Governor. He emphasized that he successfully stabilized the state and effectively addressed various issues since assuming office. claiming to have stabilized the state’s economy and revived abandoned projects. However, the APC, in a counter-statement signed by the acting Chairman, Mr Tajudeen Lawal, expressed skepticism over these claims. The APC alleges that the Adeleke administration plans to re-commission projects already completed by the previous APC-led government to create a façade of progress.

This ongoing tension between political parties in Nigeria raises concerns about whether the country’s political landscape can ever transcend party loyalty. As the nation remains entrenched in party politics, it begs the question of whether a more cooperative and productive approach to governance can be achieved in Africa’s largest democracy.
