The British embassy in Niger Republic’s capital, Niamey has temporarily decreased its number of staff due to the security situation in the country.
This was according to Britain’s foreign ministry on Thursday, August 3, over a week after a military junta took ousted the president and took over the African country.
The British Foreign Office had remarked that there had been a military takeover in Niger, which has since spurred a series of protests and unrest.
The Foreign Office statement read:
“The Pro-coup group had organised the protest on 30 July (M62) and they have rallied for another demonstration that will hold on Thursday, 3 August, Niger’s Independence Day.
These protests can be destructive and aggressive and the situation could quickly escalate without warning.”
