Berlin police have announced that an autopsy will be conducted to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the death of a 24-year-old Mexican woman, Maria Fernanda Sanchez. Her body was discovered floating in a canal in the Adlershof neighborhood of Berlin by a passerby on Saturday. The woman had been reported missing at the end of July, and Interpol had issued a search notice for her.
According to a police spokesperson, a death investigation has been initiated, and the autopsy will aim to clarify the cause of her death. As of now, there is no evidence of any external influence on her demise.
The case has gained attention in Mexico, prompting President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to request additional efforts in the search for Sanchez. Reports from Mexican media suggest that she was pursuing a master’s degree in Germany.
Late on Saturday, the Mexican Foreign Ministry released a statement on behalf of Sanchez’s family, confirming her death and requesting privacy and respect during this difficult time.
Several days after her disappearance, Berlin police had mentioned “indications” that Sanchez was “in an exceptional psychological situation.” However, further details and insights are expected to be revealed through the autopsy, which is likely to be conducted in the next few days.
