Nigerians nationwide have been warned to prepare for an imminent flood as Cameroonian authorities let loose, water from the Lagdo Dam.

The National Emergency Management Agency–NEMA, has announced that nine states namely: Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Anambra, Kogi, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa could be in the danger zones.

Mustapha Ahmed, the Director General of the agency had made this known during an emergency meeting where he had given an update on the release of water from the Lagdo Dam.

According to Ahmed, the current release of water by the dam had led to the displacement of about 48,100 persons in 13 states of the federation and it could possibly lead to the destruction of crops and different infrastructures.

He had also revealed that since August 14 when the dam was opened, 28 deaths had been recorded and approximately 159,157 persons had been affected in the process.

Subsequently, the NEMA DG urged all heads of State Emergency Management Agency–SEMA to reduce the effects of the disaster.
The agency cautioned authorities of state and local governments along rivers Niger and Benue basin areas to immediately activate their emergency response plans to avert potential damage and losses that will arise due to the flooding of communities.
