US State Department Issues Travel Advisory, Advises Against Travel to Iraq

The US State Department released an advisory urging American citizens to refrain from travelling to Iraq in light of recent assaults on US troops and personnel within the region. The advisory cited the prevalence of terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and limited assistance for US citizens from Mission Iraq.

Notably, there has been a surge in attacks against US forces in Iraq and Syria, coinciding with the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and local militants. Last week, a US warship intercepted numerous drones and cruise missiles fired from Yemen, underscoring the escalating security situation.

The advisory came after the evacuation of eligible family members and non-emergency US government personnel from the US Embassy Baghdad and the US Consulate General Erbil, owing to heightened security threats against US personnel and interests. The State Department emphasized that anti-US militias pose a threat to American citizens and international companies across Iraq.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had earlier expressed concerns about the potential escalation of attacks on American troops in the Middle East and the possibility of Iran widening the conflict. In response to escalating regional tensions, Washington remains vigilant, particularly concerning activities by Iran-backed groups.

The ongoing war, which began after attacks on Israel, has led to a significant toll on civilian lives, with subsequent retaliatory air strikes exacerbating the situation. In light of security considerations, US government personnel in Baghdad have been instructed to avoid using Baghdad International Airport.

Furthermore, recent weeks have witnessed a notable increase in US naval presence in the Middle East, with the deployment of two aircraft carriers, their support ships, and around 2,000 Marines. The Pentagon’s decision on Saturday to dispatch a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defense missile system battalions to the region underscores the gravity of the security situation.
