China’s foreign ministry declared the United States devoid of any right to intervene in the ongoing issues between China and the Philippines during a regular press briefing on Thursday.
In response to the US’s pledge to defend the Philippines, ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that any such commitment should not impinge upon China’s sovereignty and maritime interests in the South China Sea, nor should it embolden the Philippines’ illegal claims.
In parallel developments, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed America’s unwavering commitment to Philippine defense, accusing China of unlawful behavior in the South China Sea. Tensions have escalated between China and the Philippines, notably in the disputed waters around the Second Thomas Shoal, a part of the Spratly Islands.
The recent collision between a Chinese vessel and a Philippine boat on Sunday has further exacerbated the situation, prompting Manila to denounce the “dangerous blocking maneuvers” of the Chinese vessel in the strongest terms.
