Just In: NLC, TUC Announce Nationwide Strike Over Attack on Ajaero

The organised labour unions, including the Trade Union Congress, TUC, and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, have announced a nationwide strike over the attack on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC President.

While broadcasting the development at a briefing in Abuja on Friday, November 3, the leadership of the NLC and TUC issued a 6-point demand to the Federal Government, including the hasty removal of the Imo State Commissioner of Police and the Area Commander, among other police officers, for their purported involvement in the brutalisation and humiliation of Ajaero and the other workers.

The nationwide strike is set to begin on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

Earlier this week, the NLC President was reportedly apprehended and brutalized during an organized labour protest in Imo State on Wednesday, November 1.

Ajaero was carried away by officers of the Nigerian Police Force and had later appeared with injuries on his face, showing that he had been beaten up.

The NLC Publicity Secretary, Benson Upah, while speaking on the development on Thursday had revealed that Ajaero could not be treated at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri, due to the degree of injuries he sustained, hence the need for him to be flown abroad for treatment.
