Ana Clara Benevides tragically passed away during a scorching Taylor Swift concert held at the Nilton Santos stadium Rio de Janeiro on Friday night. The 23-year-old fell ill amid a record-breaking heatwave sweeping across Brazil, with temperatures reaching an unprecedented 59.3 degrees Celsius on the same day.
Event organizer T4F reported that Ana Clara became unwell during the concert attended by 60,000 fans. Swift’s performance took place in a neighborhood far from Rio’s breezy beaches, contributing to the intense heat within the stadium. Despite swift attention from medical staff on-site and subsequent transfer to the Salgado Filho Hospital, Ana Clara did not survive.
Swift, in Brazil for six shows as part of The Eras Tour, expressed her condolences on Instagram, stating, “I’m not going to be able to speak about this from the stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it.” While Swift mentioned Benevides died “before my show,” conflicting reports suggest she fell ill during the concert.
Justice Minister Flavio Dino called for an investigation into unconfirmed reports of a lack of drinking water for the audience at the stadium, emphasizing the need for services to be safe and suitable for health according to the Consumer Protection Code.
Earlier, during her concert, Swift interrupted the performance to address fans falling ill, requesting the production team to provide water for those in need. Heat exhaustion, common in such conditions, can lead to serious consequences if not addressed promptly, with heatstroke posing a severe medical emergency.
