On Friday morning, some National Guard Soldiers proceeded to set free, a remanded minister and a senior state official.

Hours after this undertaking, intense gunfire was reported in Guinea-Bissau’s capital.

The members of the National Guard had released the officials before taking refuge in the barracks, south of the capital.

Special forces was forced to intervene after negotiation failed, leading to a gunfire exchange between the two sides.

At the time of filing this report at 11:00am (GMT+1) calm has been restored.

The Finance Minister, Solueuman Seidi and the secretary of state for the treasury, Antonio Monteiro, were remanded for allegedly irregularly withdrawing $10m (£8m) state funds.

They were interrogated on Thursday afternoon by an anti-corruption inquest to throw light on the payments made to 11 companies.

During a parliamentary session on Monday, the leader of the main opposition party alleged that the politicians were friendly with leaders of the governing coalition.

However, Seidi had defended the payments, saying that they were legal.

On Thursday after the interrogations, Mr Seidi and Mr Monteiro were apprehended and detained to prevent jeopardising the investigations.

The National Guard soldiers had thereafter in the evening of that day, stormed the detention cells, and released the detainees.

The location of the formerly detained officials is still unknown at this time.

President Umaro Sissoco Embalo is presently out of the country, attending Dubai’s UN’s COP28 climate conference.
