A health official on Saturday, stated that China’s surge in respiratory illness is attributed to known pathogens, dispelling concerns of new infectious diseases. The country, navigating its first full winter since lifting strict COVID-19 restrictions, has drawn attention amid a spike in illness.

The World Health Organization sought information last week, prompted by a report on clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children. Addressing the situation, Mi Feng, an official with China’s National Health Commission, outlined measures to address the rise.

These include opening more pediatric outpatient clinics, ensuring broader flu vaccine coverage for elderly individuals and children, and promoting the use of masks and handwashing.

Despite the heightened focus, both domestic doctors and international experts have not expressed alarm about China’s outbreaks. Similar increases in respiratory diseases have been observed in many other countries following the easing of pandemic measures, a step China took at the end of the previous year.
