Growing up, stroke was something we associated with the elderly, a sort of ominous “get ready for death” syndrome. Mama Emeka had it when she was eighty, and back then, it seemed like a condition reserved for the aged. But reality hit hard as younger folks, even those in their 30s and 40s, started grappling with this deadly ailment. It shattered the myth that stroke was exclusively for old folks. The one thing we were all sure of – stroke is ruthless.

What’s Stroke Anyway?

Stroke occurs when part of the brain gets deprived of oxygen and nutrients due to interrupted or reduced blood supply. It’s a medical emergency demanding immediate attention to prevent brain tissue damage and other complications.

Why Young Adults?

Surprisingly, young adults are increasingly falling prey to this menacing disease. Experts in Nigeria point to various factors driving this surge – hypertension, age, obesity, diabetes, stress, substance abuse, smoking, excessive alcohol, unhealthy diets, inactivity, viral infections, and heart conditions. This trend, once relatively uncommon, is now more pronounced.

According to Dr. Rashidat Olanigan, a neurologist at LASUTH, stroke in young adults has surged in recent times, presenting a significant health challenge globally. While older individuals still make up the majority of stroke cases, the impact on younger patients is more severe, affecting their lifelong productivity and causing substantial disabilities.

Unveiling the Causes

The causes span a spectrum. Ischemic stroke, more common in older adults, is triggered by a blocked blood vessel supplying the brain. On the other hand, hemorrhagic stroke arises from a burst blood vessel within the brain. High blood pressure, weakened blood vessels, inflammation, and aneurysms contribute to this scenario.

Prevention – The Way Forward

Preventing stroke involves lifestyle adjustments and managing underlying health conditions. Factors like obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes contribute significantly to stroke risk. Making healthier choices, regular check-ups, controlling cholesterol levels, managing blood pressure, and maintaining a healthy weight are vital preventive measures.

Message to the Young Guns

Dear 20-something-year-old, stroke doesn’t discriminate by age anymore. It’s time to start caring for your health. Eat wisely, ditch the excessive seasoning in your meals, get adequate sleep, exercise – occasionally, just take a stroll. Remember, stroke is unforgiving; prevention is key.
