Greek lawmakers are poised to vote on a bill allowing migrants to acquire a three-year residency and work permit In an effort to address labor shortages. Greece, a gateway to the European Union for migrants and asylum seekers, has witnessed many individuals working illegally, particularly in construction, farming, and tourism.

The conservative government aims to manage migration by hiring more border guards and increasing patrols. The proposed bill responds to an estimated 300,000 undocumented migrants residing in the country.

State Minister Akis Skertsos emphasized the government’s stance, stating, “We don’t want invisible people.” He explained that the permit aims to attract workers for roles that unemployed Greeks have been unwilling to undertake, contributing to public order.

According to the conservative government’s bill, migrants and asylum-seekers residing in Greece for at least three years, with a clean criminal record and a job offer, can apply for the new residency permit by December 2024. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ party controls the majority in the 300-seat parliament, ensuring the expected approval of the bill on Monday evening. The legislation also introduces the role of a national coordinator on migrant returns.

Migration ministry officials anticipate around 30,000 applicants, primarily from countries such as Albania, Georgia, Pakistan, and the Philippines, for the new permit type.
