The Federal Government of Nigeria has reopened the Third Mainland Bridge, after a month of closing it down for repairs.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi had said in a statement on Thursday:

“We are delighted to announce that parts of the Third Mainland Bridge which were closed off last month will reopen today, 21st December, 2023 by 6:00pm.

“After days of essential maintenance, the whole bridge is now completely accessible to the public, guaranteeing smoother connectivity and safe commuting.”

The Minister praised Nigerians for their “forbearance during the provisional closure,” adding that the government was reaffirming its commitment to infrastructure upkeep and public welfare.

The move had come over one month after the Federal Government disclosed through the Ministry of Works that it would be barring off, two ramps of the Third Mainland Bridge for repairs.

For the maintenance work, motorists were urged to cooperate with the traffic management officials by obeying and observing all redirections and additionally using alternative routes.

The Lagos State Third Mainland bridge is arguably Africa’s second-largest bridge, extending nearly 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) to link Lagos Island (the business heart of the city) to the mainland where most people live.
