Abuja, Nigeria: With the clock ticking down on 2023, a flurry of activity grips the National Assembly as it races to pass the 2024 budget before the year’s final curtain. Scheduled for today, December 30th, the vote marks a last-minute dash to set the country’s financial sails for the coming year.

While some might argue about the Assembly’s readiness, one thing’s for sure: everyone’s eager to step into the new year prepared, even if it means a last-minute sprint. After all, what a year it’s been!

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives will huddle in their respective chambers to rubber-stamp the harmonized budget, a document painstakingly crafted by the National Assembly. Leading the charge from the Senate, President Godswill Akpabio himself will preside over what promises to be a momentous – and possibly tense – session.

National Assembly Scrambles to Pass Budget as New Year Looms

Recall, it was just November 29th when President Bola Tinubu unveiled the hefty N27.5 trillion budget plan, christened the “Budget of Renewed Hope.” With grand promises of micro-economic stability, poverty reduction, and improved social security, the President painted a rosy picture of the year ahead.

Security, local job creation, and macro-economic stability topped the list of priorities, alongside investments in human capital, poverty reduction, and social security. But let’s be real here, folks. We all know what’s happening in Plateau State. Did the President address that? And let’s not forget the federal government workers still reeling from two months of unpaid salaries. While the budget paints a hopeful picture, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

Back in November, during his first budget presentation, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of human capital development, particularly focusing on children. He rightly stated that our people are our most valuable resource, the bedrock of national progress.

So, will this budget truly deliver on its promises? Will it bridge the gap between grand plans and lived realities? Only time will tell. But one thing’s certain: as the clock strikes midnight, tomorrow and we usher in 2024, the eyes of the nation will be glued to the National Assembly, waiting to see if this “Budget of Renewed Hope” lives up to its name.
