So let’s say you get your ears pierced, you are all excited about your new style and how it makes a major difference in your appearance. What Is A Piercing Trauma Bump?

A piercing trauma bump is an odd growth that occurs during the healing process of a piercing. It manifests as a raised area near the piercing, with more redness and irritation than the typical initial swelling. It’s worth noting that this bump isn’t the typical swelling and redness associated with a piercing recovery.

Causes of Piercing Trauma Bump

Piercing trauma bumps can stem from various causes:

1. Infection: Improper maintenance or the use of low-quality jewelry can lead to bacterial or viral infections, resulting in bumps.

2. Irritation: Tight jewelry, metal allergies, or repeated snagging can all irritate the piercing, causing bumps to grow.

3. Hypertrophic Scarring: This is an overproduction of scar tissue, a natural but overly aggressive healing response that is particularly common in cartilage piercings.

How Can You Identify A Piercing Trauma Bump?

When checking for a piercing trauma bump, look for certain indications. If it’s larger than usual, has a different color, feels more sore, or has any discharge like pus, it could be a bump rather than a typical healing.

Also, keep in mind the possibility of keloids and elevated scars. If you’re not sure what you’re dealing with, it’s always a good idea to seek expert help for an accurate diagnosis. Your piercer or healthcare expert can provide the information you need for proper care.

Home Treatment For Piercing Trauma Bump

There are a few things you can do to care for your piercing trauma bumps at home which include:

Hygiene: Gently clean the region with a saline solution. Avoid using harsh soaps or ointments in order to prevent further discomfort.

Jewelry: Select implant-grade titanium or surgical steel jewelry. Make sure it fits properly to avoid putting too much pressure on the piercing.

Lifestyle: Avoid touching the piercing and sleep on the other side to reduce pressure. Also avoid snagging on clothing or hair, allowing your healing bump the space it requires.

Medications: If a piercing trauma bump is causing substantial pain or shows signs of infection, you may consider taking medicine. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen, can help manage discomfort and inflammation.

However, before taking any medicine, you should consult with a healthcare expert or your piercer to confirm that it is appropriate for your particular situation.
