Nigerian Actress Sentenced to Jail for Mishandling New Naira Notes

A popular Nigerian actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, has been sentenced to six months in prison for disrespecting the country’s new Naira notes. The verdict, delivered on Thursday, serves as a strong reminder about the importance of treating currency with respect.

What Happened?

Omoseyin faced backlash after a video surfaced online showing her spraying and stepping on the newly designed Naira notes at a social event. This act is considered illegal in Nigeria, as Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act prohibits tampering with the currency.

The Trial and Sentence:

The actress was initially arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) before being handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation. During her trial, she initially pleaded not guilty but later changed her plea to guilty after being presented with overwhelming evidence.

Justice Served:

After considering all the facts, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sentenced Omoseyin to six months in prison. She was also given the option of paying a fine of N300,000 to avoid jail time.
