On Friday, a total of 201 Covenant University (CU), Ota students in Ogun State were awarded First Class degrees for the 2019/2020 academic season

Miss Paula-Peace Onyinyechi, a graduate of the Biochemistry Department, College of Sciences, emerged as the best graduating student, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98, according to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, who revealed this at the institution’s 15th convocation ceremony dubbed “The Release of Eagles” on Friday.

It was revealed that a total of 1,664 students received Bachelor’s degrees, with 201 students (12.08%) receiving first class honors, 793 students (47.66%) receiving second class upper, 595 students receiving second class lower honors, 75 third-class students, and 254 postgraduate students.

The Vice Chancellor congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to be change agents, light-bearers, solution providers, and pathfinders in facing Nigeria’s and the world’s many challenges.

He said that the university kept its students occupied with activities that trained them for leadership and constructive dialogue, as well as skills to improve their lives.

Covenant is a leadership academy with a mission to raise a new generation of leaders in all fields of human endeavor, as well as to redeem the battered image of the black man, as molded in the graduands by its seven core values of faith, possibility mindset, honesty, capacity building, duty, diligence, and sacrifice, according to Adebayo.

Dr. Valentine Obi, the founder and group CEO of e-Transact Global in Nigeria, who spoke on the topic of “Repositioning Higher Education in Africa: Building Reputation Gaps in African Universities,” said it is critical for African ivory towers to concentrate on values and re-think on how to come up with practical solutions to society issues rather than just educate students on facts.
