Medical Graduates in Kenya Demands For Internship Placements, Protesters Threatens Nationwide Strike

In Kenya, more and more people are seeking medical attention, leading to an increased demand for healthcare services. However the problem is that there aren’t enough doctors and nurses because many are unemployed. Patients suffer as medical professionals struggle to meet the rising demand. Like the likes of Kevin Oduor, this crisis hit home when his wife died due to inadequate care at a hospital. Despite more people graduating from medical schools, few are actually practicing, worsening the staffing crisis in hospitals.

Internship for medical students gives hands-on experience, helping them apply classroom knowledge to real patient care. It lets them explore different specialties and decide their career path.

Also, it prepares them for residency by gradually increasing responsibility under supervision, shaping them into capable and caring doctors. The delay in internship postings for medical students in Kenya is an ongoing issue, affecting over 1,000 interns waiting for almost a year. Despite efforts by the KMPDU to streamline the process, the issue persists.

Recent protests led by Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah underscores the urgency of the situation. Unfortunately, what was considered a friendly protest which were joined by Kenyan health practitioners like doctors, dentists, pharmacists, soon turned into chaos as Mr. Davji was allegedly shot by the police, sustaining a head injury. While the intern placement delays are concerning, we need to address the root causes to find a sustainable solution.

Understanding The Issue

Internship delays happen for a few reasons. Firstly, there aren’t enough spots in hospitals for all the new doctors. Secondly, the government doesn’t always have enough money to make more internship programs or improve hospitals. On top of that, some hospitals don’t have enough staff or equipment.

The internship delay causes a ripple effect – you know this popular pidgin saying “e go touch everybody”? That’s exactly the case of internship delay. New doctors feel stressed and might have money troubles. The current doctors have to do extra work, which can make them tired and unhappy. And when there aren’t enough doctors, patients might not get the care they need.

Moreover, it’s not always easy on the government. The government has to think about money and quality. Making more internship spots costs a lot for things like equipment and salaries. Also, having too many interns can make it hard to make sure they’re all learning properly. So, the government has to work their way around finding a balance to give good healthcare without spending too much.

Conclusion

Protests can be powerful for getting attention, but they can also disrupt healthcare services. While they raise awareness about important issues, they might affect patients needing care. Also coupled with the fact that innocent protesters could lose their lives if a fight breaks out. Medical graduates should collaborate with private organizations to establish more residency programs that can help address the shortage of positions.
