On March 11th, the Lagos State Government sparked outrage in the Lekki/Ajah area after demolishing shanty homes and makeshift structures in the Jakande neighborhood. Residents, left with nothing but rubble and despair, are questioning the government’s actions.

The eviction process began on a Sunday, with local authorities overseeing the operation. Soon after, officials from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, along with security forces, tore down numerous buildings, leaving many residents homeless.

Disturbing footage captured by AFP showed the helpless residents watching in horror as their homes were destroyed.

Lagos in Turmoil: Residents Left Homeless After Shanty Demolitions

One resident, Benjamin Ogbebor, spoke out in utter distress. With his home reduced to debris, he expressed his despair, “I have nowhere to go. My family is scattered, and we haven’t even eaten today. This is chaos! The government needs to help us, they can’t just leave us on the streets!”

Another resident, Emmanuel Williams, echoed the sentiment, pleading with the Lagos State Government to offer assistance. With their homes demolished, many residents are now facing an uncertain future.

The Lagos State Government has yet to comment on the situation or offer any form of compensation to the displaced residents. This demolition has ignited a fierce debate, raising questions about urban planning, the treatment of low-income residents, and the responsibility of the government to provide adequate housing solutions.
